Submission deadline: May 13 2022
Queer Arts Festival 2022 Theme: HAUNTINGS
What haunts you? Fear? Insecurity? Longing? Depending on your perspective, culture and identity, the gothic can encapsulate myriad experiences. In a queer context, our very existence is haunting ― a reminder of what colonial culture attempted to erase; a ghostly representation of our kin taken from us because of their queerness; an ephemeral suggestion of what future lays in wait across generations.
This year’s QAF Community Art Show will be held June 20 – July 8, 2022 at the James Black Gallery (144 East 6th Avenue, Vancouver). We’re inviting the artists in local LGBTQIA2+ community to contribute works that explore the Hauntings theme – though all submitted works will be considered.
The Community Art Show was founded in 1998 by a collective of queer artists and was the foundation on which the Queer Arts Festival was built. QAF and the James Black Gallery are excited to join forces for the very first time this year to co-present the QAF Community Art Show, which continues to be an integral Festival event and a declaration of solidarity within our local 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Our annual Community Art Show presents work from artists regardless of their professional resume and is open to all artists from the Lower Mainland.
We are accepting 2-D visual works, sculpture, media art, and interdisciplinary works for submission. Public and outdoor installations will also be considered. As this is a group show, the opportunity to present large-scale, multiple piece/series works and work requiring special technical display equipment may be limited in order to accommodate as many artists as possible.
Please submit the following, to submission@queerartsfestival.com:
- digital images of artworks (as attachments)
- all works must be professionally presented; wall-mounted pieces must be ready to hang
- artwork information (title, medium, year, dimensions, price)
- artist bio (optional)
- artist statement (optional)
- resume/cv (optional)
- headshot (optional)
- links/social media (optional)
Submissions will be accepted until May 13, 2022 or when the venue has reached capacity. Participating artists will receive an honorarium. Installation will take place at the James Black Gallery from June 18 – 20. QAF and JBG staff will be on hand to help with installation, but your participation and assistance is always appreciated whenever possible.
Submission deadline: May 13, 2022
Please allow minimum 2 weeks for a response. We appreciate your patience.
