SUMMARY:DIY Podplay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with Neworld Theatre and the Vancouver Queer Film Festival Click HERE! to pre-register\, or arrive 30 minutes prior to start time to register on the day. Podplays are short\, site–specific audio play that takes participants on a walk through the geography of a city and the urban obsessions of its residents. Much like you would listen to an audio guide in a museum\, you load podplays onto portable media players and are guided on a walk by narration that combines story\, music and directional cues. Neworld Theatre\, in association with the Queer Arts Festival and the Queer Film Festival\, is presenting DIY PodPlay Workshops. Try your hand at this unique art form. Put your stamp on it. Tell the story of the place where you live. Renowned Queer playwright C. E. Gatchalian\, himself a writer of podplays\, will lead you through the imaginative and technological hoops of podplay creation. Learn how to write a short play in which street corners\, parking meters\, fire hydrants and traffic lights play pivotal roles. Then learn all the necessary steps to record\, edit and present your podplay. About the Presenter: Neworld Theatre is an award-winning\, Vancouver-based theatre company that creates\, produces and tours new plays and performance events. We tell stories that reflect Canada's diversity in the broadest sense – cultural\, linguistic\, social and economic. We use popular forms to examine our lives in the context of who counts\, who doesn't\, and what our relationship is to the people we may think we aren't. Since 1999\, Neworld has won more than 20 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards (from over 50 nominations)\, the Alcan Performing Arts Award\, the Vancouver Sun Innovation Award\, the Seattle Times Footlight Award\, the Canada Council Theatre for Young Audiences Award. Neworld's productions have been seen in major festivals across North American and in Europe. These include Ali and Ali and the aXes of Evil\, Mixie and the Halfbreeds\, Adrift\, Crime and Punishment and Asylum of the Universe. In 2009\, Neworld also co-founded PL 1422 a cultural hub in East Vancouver co-managed with three other indie theatre companies. In addition to its mainstage productions\, Neworld produces a range of events\, from cabaret nights to live readings to public lectures and interviews. Neworld also works closely with community groups\, pairing professional artists with non-professionals from different communities to help them create performances that address their self-defined aspirations and concerns. [media-credit id=1 align="alignleft" width="600"][/media-credit]

SUMMARY:The Charge of the Documentarian
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. This free artists’ talk explores the passion and ethics of documentary making. Director Susi Graf spent upward of seven years following a group of homeless queer youth in New York City\, yielding the feature film Lost in the Crowd. To make her semi-autobiographic film\, I Am\, Sonali Gulati returned to Delhi\, India to speak with gay and lesbian Indians in a landscape where being queer was until recently a criminal offense. [caption id="attachment_783" align="alignleft" width="194" caption="Sonali Gulati"][/caption] While their subject matter may differ\, these two women directors have both experienced the tremendous amount of labour and love that goes into developing relationships and documenting under-heard voices. Through this moderated artists’ talk\, Graf and Gulati discuss their process—from first contact with interviewees to using their films as a tool for awareness. This moderated talk\, with an audience Q&A session\, is aimed at documentary filmmakers\, non-fiction authors\, researchers\, outreach workers or anyone with a desire to empower the voices of others. Moderated by educator and art lover\, Louise Pohl. Hosted by the Queer Arts Festival

SUMMARY:MACHiNENOiSY's Youth Contact Improv Workshop: Law of Proximity
DESCRIPTION:5-day youth contemporary dance workshop: August 2-6\, 4:30-6:30 Click HERE! to pre-register online\, or register in person 30 minutes prior to start of first class. MACHiNENOiSY Artistic Directors Delia Brett and Daelik offer a 5 day workshop introducing the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation. Contact improvisation (CI) is a dance technique in which points of physical contact provide the starting point for movement improvisation. CI is unique in that it requires no formal dance training. CI works with simple movement principles like balance\, counter balance\, the force of gravity and the physics of momentum in relation to another body. One of the underlying practices of CI is to develop clarity of intention when communicating through touch. It is a dance of proximity as it works with shared weight\, shared choice making and shared physical contact. It develops self-awareness and a sense of interpersonal trust. Contact Improvisation video Law of Proximity Workshop We will begin each class by arriving in the space physically\, emotionally and mentally. Through a series of relatively still/slow exercises designed to let go of high-tone muscularity and encourage the release of the joints and connective tissues\, we will build a connection with our body on a deeper level. Alone\, in pairs and collectively we will explore gravity and the inner energy which comes from our center and moves through our whole body right to the periphery. An emphasis will be placed on how to move with an active/relaxed body. We will explore varying qualities of touch and pressure and some partnered gentle touch or bodywork that prepares the student to have a dialogue of listening and responding through touch. All of this will prepare the student to be ready for being in the present moment and moving from the senses. Through training in Contact Improvisation\, we empty ourselves so that we can learn and receive\, explore and experience\, give and take. August 2-6\, 4:30-6:30 daily Bursaries available for all applicants; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Apply for a bursary in our online application form HERE!
