Cris Derksen Orchestral Powwow
June 24 @ 7:00 pm
with Allegra Chamber Orchestra
The Chippewa Travellers and the Allegra Chamber Orchestra perform cellist/composer Cris Derksen’s Juno-nominated composition.
Cellist/composer Cris Derksen performs with Allegra Chamber Orchestra and Powwow dancers in this chamber symphonic work composed around Powwow pieces accessed from Tribal Spirit’s library. This project brings Aboriginal music to the centre of the European model as aboriginal artists lead the way to create new forms of music.
Cris Derksen is an award winning half-Cree, half-Mennonite composer and cellist, performing on an international scale. Cris’s work has always centred on the Traditional and Contemporary layers in art. The Orchestral Powwow Project highlights The Chippewa Travellers’ powwow, and Derksen’s recording of it was a 2016 Juno nominee for Best Instrumental Album.
